Buying Manager
St Helier, Jersey · Permanent, full-time
Run the buying for an 18-year-old Amazon business that operates like it was founded last year.
Onogo sells across Amazon US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia and Japan, plus eBay. We are a small, senior team with serious tooling: our own analytics and automation platform sits between Amazon and our ERP. The Buying Manager decides what we sell, owns the margin on it, and leads the buying team. It is the most commercially independent role in the company.
The role
You will own the product range end to end: finding and evaluating new lines, negotiating with suppliers, setting pricing, keeping winners in stock and managing the lifecycle of what we already sell. You will lead a small buying team and report directly to the CEO.
- Range and margin. Decide what we sell: find products, test them against our margin requirements after every Amazon cost, and make clear go or no-go calls
- Suppliers. Negotiate cost, terms and exclusives with suppliers in the UK, Europe and Asia; build relationships that last; represent Onogo at trade shows
- Pricing and portfolio. Set pricing and repricing on your lines and manage the portfolio against three numbers: gross profit generated, stock availability, and slow or dead stock
- Team. Lead and develop the product buyers, allocate categories and suppliers across the team, and sign off their proposals
- Reporting. Work with Finance on purchasing budgets, stock and cash flow; report to the CEO on the pipeline and margin performance
Who we are looking for
Two backgrounds fit this role, and we are equally interested in both:
- A professional buyer or purchasing manager. You have bought for a retailer, wholesaler or distributor: sourcing, supplier negotiation, range building, stock and margin management. Amazon can be learned; buying judgement cannot
- An experienced Amazon operator. You have run or managed an Amazon business, brand or account: Seller Central, FBA, listing and pricing, product selection, and you know the fee structure cold
Either way, you will need:
- A commercial instinct for products: you can look at data and a cost price and see the opportunity, or the trap
- Confidence negotiating with suppliers, in writing and in person
- Comfort with numbers: landed cost, margin after fees, stock turn, and a spreadsheet that holds up
- The ability to work independently and deliver without supervision in a small team
- Fluency with modern tooling. We work heavily with AI and expect you to embrace that
Useful but not required: experience leading a team, selling across EU or US marketplaces, importing from overseas suppliers.
What we offer
- Salary: £55,000 to 70,000 depending on experience
- Progression: A flat structure, a direct line to the CEO, and a track record of giving real ownership to people who earn it
- Travel: Trade shows and supplier visits in the UK and Europe
-
Hours and location: 40 hours, Monday to Friday, based at our office in St Helier
- Applicants must hold Entitled or Licensed status to work in Jersey, or be eligible for Licensed status. Relocation support is available for the right candidate.
